Zombie Project- Engineering
In this project, we built something inspired by our zombie comics we did in Humanities class.
My group made a miniature model of the campsite that our comic takes place in, with the alarm system around the edges.
Artist statement:
For our project, we created a miniature model of a fence we designed to surround the fictional camp in our graphic novel, American Scream. The fence is made of materials that are easily accessible to the campers in the comic. Twine is strung from tree to tree to block zombie entry and glass bottles and aluminum cans filled with rocks are tied to the twine to make noise when zombies try to get through, alerting the campers to prevent potential infiltration. Some make-shift doors to the fence are placed about the perimeter to allow campers to leave whenever necessary. The zombies in the story are not only quick paced and remarkably strong, but also greatly outnumber the group, so taking offensive action is practically suicide. Defensive action seemed like a better idea, particularly keeping zombies out and maintaining a large, safe living site for the group.
To make the model, we hot-glued cut up twigs straight up to our cardboard base (which we painted like a landscape). Then we glued moss to the twigs to act as the brush of our trees. These trees were placed on the outskirts of our designated camp area. We glued thread from tree to tree for a ring and glued miniature “milk bottles” and “soda cans” to the string. This made up our fence.
We were initially going to make the model to represent the whole fence and a full size section of the fence (just two posts), but we were given the option to focus solely on our graphic novel and we chose to do that instead.
